Sustainability
Methods of fishing
Traditional and artisanal methods are used for the capture of our products, ensuring that we do our part providing for local communities.
Seasonal Fishing
Our octopus is harvested only during specific winter and summer seasons (from January to March and June to September) to protect stock levels and allow for natural regeneration.
Artisanal Fishing Practices
We partner with local fishermen who use small, artisanal boats, supporting the local economy while prioritizing sustainable fishing methods that respect the marine ecosystem.
Biomass-Driven Quotas
Prior to each fishing season, government agencies conduct thorough assessments of the octopus population, measuring biomass, species type, and size across different regions. Based on this data, quotas are established for each artisanal boat, ensuring fishing practices align with the species’ sustainable regeneration rates. If biomass levels are found to be insufficient, as in 2022, fishing seasons may be delayed or suspended to allow time for reproduction.
Strict Quota Compliance
All octopus catches are brought directly to the Auction House, where each boat’s adherence to its quota is verified. For every kilogram purchased, full documentation accompanies each batch, linking it to the boat’s quota. Once a boat has reached its limit, further fishing is prohibited, with violations resulting in license suspension.
Rigorous Cold Storage Oversight
The government conducts anonymous weekly inspections of our cold storage facilities to ensure that all products are fully documented. Any undocumented product is destroyed, and penalties are imposed on the cold store to maintain accountability and transparency in our operations.
At Congelats Del Nord, we believe that sustainability is not only about protecting resources today but ensuring their availability for future generations.
